Back to the Mainland

We always have a wonderful time on Erakor Island but it was time to take the ferry back to the mainland and head for home.

Along the Coastline

It doesn't take long to walk around Erakor Island as it is so small. There is no high ground. Let's put it this way....I wouldn't like to be stuck there during a tsunami! We took the small coastline back to the resort.

Nature Walk

We kept walking around Erakor Island. It became a bit of a nature walk as Hubby is obsessed by flora and fauna. Our young friend Geraldo who was with us became our tour guide. We came across some fruit which are apparently called  Navel Nuts as they have a nut inside that tastes like a coconut. The flesh is also edible...yummy! We noticed that all the edible fruits in Vanuatu start with the letter 'N'....maybe it's a code!

More Missionary Graves

We walked a little further on and discovered another grave site. These were the graves of four Samoan Evangelists who arrived in 1845. Erakor Island was an early Presbyterian Missionary station.

Missionary Gravesite

Three of the Missionary's children are buried here on Erakor Island and so is his wife. His wife is also buried here. She died when a passing ship left a deadly viral dysentery in it's wake. So sad...

Missionary House

Erakor Island is actually steeped in history. Rev. and Mrs John William McKenzie came to Vanuatu (then called the New Hebrides) in the 1800's and made Erakor Island their home. The foundations for that home are still here.

Outdoor Chapel

We decided we would risk the danger of falling coconuts and came across the Erakor Chapel. It is a beautiful outdoor chapel that is now used for weddings. It is supposedly the first church in the Pacific Islands.

A Walk Around Erakor Island

Erakor Island is a very small island so we decided to take a walk around it after lunch. The bungalows are lovely and the view over Erakor Lagoon is magical.
